Gemma graduated from Aberystwyth University in Wales in 2013 with 2:1 Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Scenography & Theatre Design.
Shortly after graduating, she worked at the National Theatre as a costume dresser. It was here that she developed her passion for a career in costume, furthering her knowledge and skills with designers, supervisors, performers and fellow dressers. She worked on a number of critically acclaimed productions for three and a half years including: 50 Years on Stage, King Lear, Behind the Beautiful Forever, The Beaux Stratagem, Everyman and Wonder.land.
In 2016, looking for a new challenge, Gemma turned to freelancing to gain further experience in a variety of costume and stylist roles. She landed on her feet in the world of commercials and assisted on large-scale productions including clients such as ITV, Fifa, Captain Morgans, John Lewis & Partners and HSBC. Gemma developed many strong skills during this time and gained a wealth of experience in buying, researching, stand-by and fittings.
In 2018, she revisited her routes in theatre, assisting costume supervisors at the Royal Opera House, Shakespeares Globe, Bridge Theatre and Garrick Theatre. In this role, Gemma was able to work up close with original designs by Osbert Lancaster, Kenneth Macmillan and William Chappell.
During the 2020 pandemic, Gemma fulfilled a life-long dream of opening her own vintage clothing shop. Inspired by her hero, her Nanna, she named the shop Kitty’s Attic. Gemma curated a womenswear collection on Etsy, consisting of garments from the 1950’s through to the early 2000’s. She also used the shop Instagram page to advocate for sustainable shopping.
Since the pandemic, Gemma has predominantly worked on a variety of television series as a Principle Costume Truck Supervisor and Principle Costume Stand-By including ‘Our House’, ‘Better Things’ and most recently a dark adaptation of Charles Dickens' ‘Great Expectations’ for BBC.
Gemma has been a regular Stylist Assistant to Lindsey McLean on The Graham Norton Show since 2018.
